Root is a mobile-first car insurance app that uses data and technology to make car insurance more affordable and accessible. Root uses a mobile app to collect data about how you drive, and then uses that data to offer you a personalized car insurance rate. The app also provides features like accident detection, roadside assistance, and discounts for safe driving. Root is designed to make car insurance more affordable and accessible for everyone, regardless of their driving history.

Features & Highlights

  • Personalized Insurance Rates - Root uses your driving behavior to tailor your insurance rates. For example, a new user might find that their safe driving habits can lead to significantly lower premiums compared to traditional insurance models that rely on demographic data.
  • Simple Claims Process - The app allows users to file claims directly through their mobile devices, making the process seamless. Picture this: after a minor fender bender, I opened the app, submitted my claim with a few taps, and even uploaded photos of the damage—all without having to make a phone call.
  • Real-Time Driving Feedback - With Root, you receive immediate feedback on your driving habits. After a week of driving, I received insights on how my acceleration and braking patterns could improve, which not only taught me safer driving techniques but also promised better rates in the future.
  • Convenient App Interface - The user-friendly interface makes navigating the app a breeze. I found it easy to review my policy details, check my coverage options, and even get quotes for different vehicles—all within a few minutes.
  • Flexible Payment Options - Root offers various payment plans, including monthly and annual options. This flexibility allows users to choose a payment schedule that aligns with their budget, ensuring that car insurance fits seamlessly into their finances.

Real Experience Using Root: Better car insurance

Application Scenarios

As someone who drives daily for both work and leisure, I found myself reaching for the Root app frequently. One of the first things I did after downloading it was to take the driving test, which involved tracking my driving habits over a couple of weeks. During this time, I used the app every day to log my trips, and it became second nature to check in after each drive. Another scenario was when I had to file a claim after a minor accident; I could not believe how straightforward and quick the process was. I snapped a few photos through the app and submitted my claim while sitting in my car, all without the frustration of long wait times on hold.

User Experience

The user experience of the Root app is where it truly shines. The interface is sleek and intuitive, making it easy to find what I needed without any hassle. When I first logged in, the onboarding process was straightforward, guiding me through setting up my profile and understanding how my driving scores would impact my rates. Each feature flows smoothly—from checking my driving score to managing my policy details. I was particularly impressed with the real-time driving feedback feature, which gives actionable insights. The performance is top-notch; I experienced minimal lag, and the app loaded quickly, even during busy hours. Overall, using the Root app felt more like a helpful companion on my driving journey than a traditional insurance platform.

Pricing

Pricing with Root is competitive, especially considering the potential savings based on your driving behavior. I was quoted a rate that was significantly lower than my previous insurance provider, primarily due to my safe driving habits. They offer a pay-per-mile option as well, which can be beneficial for occasional drivers. After using the app for a few months and seeing how my driving habits affected my premiums, I felt empowered to adjust my driving to save even more.

Updates & Support

Root regularly updates the app to improve functionality and address user feedback, which is evident from the release notes detailing enhancements. I had a couple of queries regarding my policy and reached out to customer support through the app; I was pleasantly surprised by the prompt and helpful responses I received. The support team was knowledgeable and offered solutions without making me feel rushed, which significantly enhanced my overall experience with the app.

Security & Privacy Review

As an American user, security and privacy are paramount, especially when it comes to financial applications like Root. The app is available on both the App Store and Google Play, ensuring that it adheres to rigorous security standards. During registration, I was required to provide basic personal information, including my driver's license number and vehicle details, which felt secure given their clear privacy policy outlining data use.

Root also emphasizes that they do not sell personal data to third parties, which alleviated some of my concerns about privacy. However, I did notice that the app collects driving data to enhance its services and personalize my experience. While this is standard practice, it’s good to be aware of the tracking behavior involved. Overall, Root strikes a balance between offering personalized services and maintaining user privacy, making me feel confident in using their platform.

App is awful. I get logged out then when I try to log back in it takes me to the sign up page. I already have a policy so I don't need to sign up. Hence I am unable to manage my policy. Have difficulty adding other drivers listed on policy to the app. Prices are good, which is good because I am paying for a headache. I plan to switch as soon as I am able because literally everything is done in the app and its a headache. You get what you pay for . Be warned.

app is terrible. For "security purposes", it'll log me out, when I try to log back in, it'll just take me in circles between the app and my email. good thing I don't need the card immediately because I would be SOL. The app will pop up in the background even tho I'm not driving or even near my vehicle. when I drop down my notification screen it basically tells me that if I'm not driving, don't worry about it. As soon as I can I'm cancelling this insurance and moving on.

This review is strictly focused on the app. The app was putting the iPhone in a loop and I could not login. I had to download the app into my Android and go through the asinine login process. I enter my email, it sends me a link to login, then I click the link and it pings my phone for a code, then I can login. When I enter the app, there's "help" in the form of email or chat. Chat's text box is below the Android bottom menu buttons removing my ability to request help. Atrocious App

I did the test drive for about 10 days. I got a quote for $40 cheaper than what I pay. I was ready to switch. The next day I open app to purchase and the quote was increased...it was more than I pay now. No I will not be switching. I sent an email because they have no contact number. Mary emailed me back 2 days later and said the quote went up because of rates in my area. Well that was not on anything i read in the beginning. It stated that the insurance was based off your driving. Also i had a 10 on everything up until the last 2 days and it went to a 7. This app also eats up your battery life. I don't like the fact that you have to email and wait for a response. No contact number was ever given. Good luck to all.

The app tracks your phone. Period. It has no way to determine, or option, to tell when you're a passenger, or if a passenger is using your phone. It also randomly "thinks" you're driving, i.e. pops up saying it's tracking your drive... While you're sitting at your desk. Very flawed. Also, when it updates your "score", there is no score ard or metrics or anything. Just a rate hike with no reasoning.
